Installing InReports Generator service

Summary

With the InReports generator service you can

  • Distribute InReports by mail
  • Schedule distributions
  • Manage distribution schemes via a web page

The generator service will generate and send your corporate reports when you want them. You can use parameters in your InReports to filter the data you want, and in effect you will be able to send intermediary reports, with for instance all records since the last distribution.

The generator is included when you purchase the Professional edition of InReports. For more information about the different editions, please refer to the compare page.

Requirements

InReports Designer can run on almost any computer that has the .NET Framework 2.0 or later installed. These requirements are here more for reference. If you don't match the requirements, you can download the install file and test if you like. InReports Viewer does not cost anything.

  • Internet Information Service (IIS) 6.0 or later
  • .NET Framework 2.0 or later
  • 500MHz Processor or better
  • 256MB RAM or more

Install InReports generator service

The InReports generator service is the service that performs the tasks set up by the management web site (available below).

A dialog should appear with the question Do you want to run or save this file?. Click Run to install InReports Generator service. A security warning may appear saying that the publisher could not be verified. Click Run to continue with the install process.

Install InReports generator management web site

With the InReports generator management web site you can manage all the tasks and details for the InReports generator service. You will also find details about the success or failure of the projects that you have set up.

A dialog should appear with the question Do you want to run or save this file?. Click Run to install InReports Generator web management web site. A security warning may appear saying that the publisher could not be verified. Click Run to continue with the install process.

Download installer for database

The database is needed by the service to hold the information of projects and tasks. The database installer can be used to install the database and tables needed by the service into your existing SQL server. The installation executable has been tested with Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

Installing

Install IIS Services

  1. Start menu
  2. Default Programs
  3. Programs and Features
  4. Turn Windows features on or off
  5. Locate the Internet Information Services checkbox
  6. Check Internet Information Services
  7. Check ASP.NET under Internet Information Services, World Wide Web Services, Application Development Features
  8. Check IIS Meta base and IIS 6 configuration compatibility under Internet Information Services, Web Management Tools, IIS 6 Management Compatibility
  9. Click OK

Add specific AppPool

This is only needed if you want to control the InGenerator service from the InGenerator management Web site.

  1. Start Internet information Services (IIS) Manager
  2. Expand the top node under Connections
  3. Click Application Pools
  4. Add Application Pool
    1. Click Add Application Pool… under Actions
    2. Name the new Application Pool Generator
    3. Choose .NET Framework v2.0.50727 as .NET Framework version, and
    4. Classic as the Managed pipeline mode.
  5. Give access to InGenerator Service
    1. Select the new Application Pool and click Advanced Settings… under Actions
    2. Change Identity to LocalSystem
    3. Click OK

Install the database

  1. Download install file from above
  2. Run the installation file
  3. Enter the database server you want to install the database to and the name of the database to create
  4. Click Next

The database will be used by the management website and the service to store the tasks that are to be performed.

Install the web site

  1. Download install file
  2. Run the installation file as administrator
    Note: You can do this by opening a command prompt as administrator and locating the msi file from there.
  3. Select the VirtualDirectory to install to. You can enter InGenerator for instance if you want to access the management web site on a different path on your web server, so the URL will be http://localhost/InGenerator instead
  4. Select Generator as the Application Pool
  5. Click Next

Now when the web site is installed, you need to configure the connection string so the web site knows where to look for settings and reports.

Configure the connection string

  1. Start Internet information Services (IIS) Manager
  2. Expand the top node under Connections
  3. Expand Sites
  4. Expand Default Web Site
  5. Click on the newly installed InGenerator application. The main window should have a header named /InGenerator Home
  6. Click on Connection Strings and click Open Feature in the top right corner
  7. Click on the generator line and click Edit... from the Actions pane
  8. You can then edit the connection string to connect to your local InReports database
    Note that the database need to have a tblAppSettings available for the InReports Generator Web site to function.

Install the service

The service will perform the tasks set up by the management web site. The management web site does not do this by itself.

  1. Download install file
  2. Run the installation file
  3. Select the folder to install to.
  4. Click Next to install the service

When the service is installed, you can find it in your services management console, or with the sc command. The name of the service is inreportsgenerator. To troubleshoot errors for the service, please refer to the EventLog, under application. You should find logs from the service under the name InReports Generator.
