The database installation creates tables in an existing database, so you need

  • An existing database server (see below for installation of a free one)

Setup a database

New install

You need to have a SQL Server available on your computer before you can host your InReports. For a free database, please take a look at the SQL Server Express database.

Download an appropriate server and open the install file. An extract dialog should appear. Click on the New install option to install a new server

Accept the terms in the dialog that appears to install the database server.

When you have your server available, you need to create the tables necessary to hold the settings and the actual InReports.

You can host your InReports on any database, for instance your project database. When you've added a database, you need to add a couple of tables to it. Download the installer application below to add the necessary tables to your database. When the download is complete, open the file to begin the installation.

A security warning might appear, click Run in case it does to continue with the installation.

database install

A new dialog will show up with the title Run Package. Select the location of your server, check "Make a database" and choose a name for your database. InReports_Demo will be used in this example.

Click Run to install the tables into the database. A dialog should appear that states "Package executed successfully."

Connecting to the database from InReports Designer

Edit InReports databases menu

If you've installed InReports Designer you can edit the InReports in your installed database from the application. Open up InReports Designer and click the menu Edit and click the InReports databases menu item.

A new dialog will open

design inreports

The InReports databases dialog lists all connection strings to various databases with inreports in them. To add a new one, click the green plus sign in the toolbar. A dialog will appear where you will have to enter a name and the connection string to the database. You can click the edit button if you want to build a default connection string based on a server and a specific database.

Choose default database

In the InReports databases dialog, select a name in the list and click the green database button in the toolbar. A default database will be selected and is displayed with a bold font. The default database will be used when you click save or load in the designer. When you're done, click the Save button in the bottom of the dialog to close it.

Verify correct install

open menu select InReport

You can check if the database is working correctly by selecting open database report from the File menu and see if you see any InReports in the dialog that appears. The dialog should look something similar to the image at the right.

save menu save InReport

Next you can choose to save your current InReport in the database that you selected as your default InReports database. Click the save database report from the File menu. A dialog should appear where you can name your report something and then click Save.

You have now set up an InReports database and managed to save an InReport to it, congratulations!

Tip: If you want a tool to connect and manage your database, a free tool is available from Microsoft, namely Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Management Studio Express.

Northwind is an example database that you can install to test against. It has some different tables with for example customers and orders. For examples of reports using this database, head over to the examples page. You can download an install file for the Northwind database if you don't have the Northwind database installed already.

If you have followed the above steps you are done and your InReports applications, for instance InReports Designer and InReports Mobile, should be able to use the InReports database.
